Any reference to ancient Mykonos (Mikonos) is entwined with fact and legend, dating back thousands of years. It is believed that the island was named in honor of Apollos grandson, Mycons. This belief is supported by the proximity of Mykonos to the island of Delos (Dilos), which was the birthplace of Apollo.

Recent archaeological evidence indicates that the island has been inhabited since 3000 BC. At the time of Alexander the Great, Mykonos became an agricultural, maritime and commercial center, while during the Roman Occupation the island was extremely wealthy and prominent.

During the Middle Ages, Mykonos was ruled by the Venetians and later suffered under the invading Saracens and Turks until its liberation – led by Greeces national heroine Mando Mavrogenous - and accession to Greece in 1830.

Following the end of WWII, the island gained a significant place in the tourist trade due to its unique architecture and genuine hospitality. Today Mykonos is one of the most desirable vacation spots in the world and enjoys the preference of many celebrities, prominent figures and common tourists.
