General Information about the Climate in Greece
The climate in Greece is typically Mediterranean, although the country's terrain and geographical location are factors that contribute to the extraordinary variety in weather conditions. This means that each area in Greece has its own unique micro-climate and weather forecast.
Greece is mainly characterized by hot and dry summers, and mild and wet winters. There are long periods of sunshine, making the country ideal for vacations all year round. Before planning your holiday, we recommend checking the weather forecast in Greece to make sure it is suitable for your holiday needs. The variations of the weather in Greece offer visitors a wide selection of places to spend their vacations.
Climate in Greece by Area
You will find a dry Mediterranean climate in most of Attica, the Cyclades Islands, the Dodecanese Islands, the low lands of Crete, the Peloponnese (along the eastern and southern coast) and Evia. Rainfall in summer is infrequent, and if it occurs it is usually a short shower. Winter weather in these parts of Greece is wet, and if rain persists, it may cause some insignificant flooding. Snow may fall in the mountainous areas, but it soon melts.
On Mainland Greece, in the areas of Epirus, Thessaly, Central Greece, Macedonia and Thrace, as well as the central, eastern and northern parts of the Peloponnese the climate is quite different. Summer weather in Mainland Greece is hot, with frequent rainfall. Winter weather is quite cold, with lots of snow in the mountainous regions. Often early morning and evening weather can be chilly especially in the open areas such as valleys and plains, while afternoons are pleasant.
The weather in Western Greece, particularly in the coastal regions of Epirus and the Ionian Islands is mild and characterized by humidity. Summers are relatively hot, while winters are temperate and enjoyable. Rainfall in these areas of Greece is frequent, which accounts for its lush and wild vegetation.
The Mountainous Regions of Greece
The weather in Greece 's mountains is rather brisk and snowfall is frequent. Summers tend to be fairly cool and some rainfall is expected. These regions, although not as well-known as the Greek Islands and the coastal areas, are perfect for winter holidays. Mountains such as Pilio, Parnassos, Helmos, Vernos, Mainalon, Vermion, Taygetos, Velouchi, and Pindos are wonderful winter getaways.
Sunny Greece!
The weather in Greece is one of the finest in the world, with the majority of the year bathed in the rays of the sun, making it possible to spend endless hours of recreation outdoors. The weather in Greece is ideal for lying on beaches, swimming and participating in water sports in the sparkling sea, taking nature walks and biking in the mountains, having picnics next to rolling rivers and lush hillsides, exploring traditional villages and sightseeing at the impressive ancient and historical monuments. If you are looking for a holiday destination where the climate is excellent, the scenery is breathtaking and the weather forecast is almost always excellent, Greece is the perfect choice!
