IMPORTANT SIGHTS ON AMORGOS ISLAND
The wall with the embrasures from the castle built during the 13th century by Ieremias Gizi for the protection of the island. In its entrance you can see the church of Agios Georgios. The tower of Gavras, in the center of Hora, a Venetian building of the 16th century today operates as a museum, in which one can find findings from excavated spots in the area.
You should definitely observe the ancient sculptures and signs. The post - Byzantine churches at Hora as well as the first High school founded in Greece after the Revolution of 1821 are places worth visiting.
Many whitewashed and perfectly structured stone made windmills are scattered all around the island as well as the remains of Hellenic and Venetian towers. Finally the monastery of Virgin Mary Chozoviotissa is considered to be the most important monument on the northeast of Hora built on a rock, 300 meters above the sea. Besides the holy picture of Virgin Mary kept in the museum of the monastery, one can also find religious heirlooms and manuscripts. Following an old custom, in the week following Easter, the icon of Virgin Mary is processed all around the island.
LOCAL PRODUCTS
In every local feast the dishes characterizing the gastronomy of Amorgos is "patatato" and "xidato" while pasteli in lemon leaves is offered to the guests after weddings as a bonbonniere.
Don't leave the island without tasting the famous xerotigana and the local drink "rakomelo" made by boiled honey and raki, sugar and clove. From the cheese production the ones standing out are kefalotiri and mizithra.
